PT Prima Plants Indonesia Signs MoU with Universitas Gadjah Mada for Agarwood Industry Development

We are thrilled to announce a major milestone in our journey toward sustainable agricultural development. On the 28th of February 2023, PT Prima Plants Indonesia officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), one of Indonesia's leading universities, to collaborate on the development of the Agarwood (Gaharu) Industry within the country.

A Strategic Collaboration for Industry Growth

This MoU is the culmination of several months of discussions between both parties, reflecting a strong commitment to mutual collaboration. The agreement involves PT Prima Plants Indonesia, its sister company Prima Plants Research & Development Sdn Bhd in Malaysia, and the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Forestry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Together, we aim to spearhead the advancement of the Agarwood industry in Indonesia.

Key Components of the MoU

The agreement outlines several key initiatives that will be pursued through this collaboration:

• Mature Gaharu Plantation Project: The MoU covers a project involving an already established 4.6-hectare Gaharu plantation owned by the Forestry Department in the Banyumas Regency of Central Java. This existing plantation will serve as a foundation for future research and development efforts.

• 50-Hectare Pilot Scheme: In addition to the mature plantation, the collaboration introduces a 50-hectare pilot scheme with UGM in Central Java. This pilot scheme will focus on the creation of a fully managed and maintained Gaharu plantation, along with associated inoculation, harvesting, and processing capabilities. This effort will allow both parties to explore sustainable ways to cultivate and process Agarwood for commercial use.

According to Albertus Bruinekool, Director of PT Prima Plants Indonesia, this MoU represents a significant step forward for the company and the Indonesian Agarwood industry:

“This MoU follows several months of discussions between both parties and outlines the framework of a mutual collaboration agreement between PT Prima Plants Indonesia, its sister company Prima Plants Research & Development Sdn Bhd in Malaysia, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Faculty of Forestry within Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). This MoU strives to develop the Agarwood Industry within Indonesia and covers not only a project for a mature existing 4.6-hectare Gaharu Plantation owned by the Forestry Department within the Banyumas Regency of Central Java, but brings in a further 50-hectare pilot scheme with UGM. The 50-hectare pilot scheme with UGM looks to develop a fully managed and fully maintained Gaharu plantation also within the Central Java region along with associated inoculation, harvesting, and processing capabilities.”

This collaboration is set to bolster not only the research and cultivation of Agarwood but also its commercial potential, creating economic opportunities and sustainable practices within the industry. We believe that by leveraging the knowledge and resources of UGM’s faculties and Prima Plants' expertise, we will be able to shape a brighter future for the Agarwood industry in Indonesia.
